Your energy fix is ending: switch without exit fees

In short: in the last 49 days of a fixed energy tariff you can usually switch without paying exit fees. If you don’t choose anything when the fix ends, your supplier moves you onto its standard variable tariff, which follows the price cap.

What happens when a fix ends?

Your supplier should write to you before the end date with your options. If you don’t act, you’re moved to its standard variable tariff. That isn’t a disaster: you can leave it at any time without a fee. But it may cost more than the fixed deals on offer, depending on the market at the time.

The 49-day window

Exit fees apply if you leave a fix early, but suppliers don’t charge them in the final 49 days. That gives you about seven weeks to compare deals and switch, either to another supplier or to a new fix with your current one.

A simple plan

  1. Seven weeks before the end date: find your current unit rates and standing charges on a recent bill.
  2. Compare: look at fixed deals against the standard variable tariff, using your own yearly usage in kWh rather than an average.
  3. Ask your supplier what they’ll offer you to stay, and compare it with the best deal you found.
  4. Switch or re-fix before the end date. Switching is free and your supply isn’t interrupted.

How Sort Admin helps: add your fix end date once and choose when to be reminded. Open the reminder and the steps are there, from comparing deals to logging the new price.
